Projects Around the House to Tackle

By Victoria Robertson on June 4, 2020

As many of us find ourselves working from home, attending college classes online and otherwise stuck in the house, it’s the perfect time to get some of that cleaning and organization done that you’ve been putting off!

So what exactly is there to do? If you’re looking for a little inspiration, these six projects are a great starting point to ensure you have ample things to do in your spare time. So turn off the TV and put that book down; it’s time for some house projects!

1. Clean Out the Pantry

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got a pantry that’s so disorganized you simply throw items into it as they fit (which they really don’t). If you find yourself in this boat, it’s as good a time as any to get some cleaning done!

Take this opportunity to go through the cabinets, pantry and other kitchen areas to clean them out, removing any scum or dust lining your shelves and throwing out old, expired food. Plus, this is a great time to organize to ensure everything is exactly where you want it, leaving plenty of room come time for grocery day!

2. Organize the Junk Drawer

The junk drawer is likely a mess, which is how it got its name. That being said, you’ve probably been throwing things in there that you no longer need, so it’s high time to go through it.

While there’s really no good way to organize it, this is the opportunity to throw out what you don’t need, group like items and make room for the second wave of items that you likely have waiting around the house to join the drawer.

3. Hang up Those Pictures

Hanging up pictures is time-consuming, a total hassle and most of us put it off for as long as possible. For that reason, you should take this opportunity to hang up your pictures, as you likely have a pile in the back of your closet waiting for this day.

Not only will you feel accomplished, but you’ll also have de-cluttered an area enough to have extra storage space, if needed. It’s a win-win!

4. Clear Through Your Files

Some people have files stacked on their kitchen counters, others have desks or tables filled with mile-high stacks of papers. However you do it, you likely have documents that need to be gone through, shredded, discarded or filed away. (Bonus points if you have mail sitting there that hasn’t even been opened yet!)

The bottom line is that you aren’t alone with that paper stack, and it’s another time-consuming project, but it’s one that’ll ensure you’re on top of your bills, take proper care of documents you no longer need and ultimately gives you more table space for the quarantine cooking you’ve been doing!

5. Clean Out Your Closet

Bedroom closets, linen closets, front-hall closets: you name it, it needs to be cleaned! There are so many ways to organize these areas better and, over time, we tend to just throw items into them anyway and save the cleaning/organizing part for later.

Well, it’s officially later! So take a few minutes (hours) and organize your closets so that everything you need it exactly where you’d expect it to be. Who knows, you may even find that you have far more room than you thought you did to store some new items that you bought during your quarantine, online shopping spree!

6. Do Your Spring Cleaning

Last, but definitely not least, it’s a great time for that spring cleaning. This isn’t the day-to-day vacuuming, but rather, those long-term cleaning projects that you’ve been putting off. For some, this means power washing the deck or siding and for others, it means getting down and scrubbing those baseboards. Whether your project is massive or simply a few odds and ends that you haven’t gotten to yet, it’s time to do it.

And whatever your spring cleaning project, odds are, you haven’t even thought about starting it. So gather the supplies you need, garner all the energy you have and go to work! I promise you’re not going to find a more convenient time to get it all done!

Performing tasks around the house can be a major pain in the butt, time-consuming and ultimately not fun. However, given the quarantine orders still in place throughout the country, we’re quickly running out of things to do.

So, utilize this time, while you have it, to get some things done around the house that you’ve otherwise been putting off!

The above six projects are a great starting place, but feel free to take a look around and determine what else you’ve been saving for a rainy day, because now’s as good a time as any to cross it off your to-do list!
